K&N KA-1709 Replacement Air Filter for Kawasaki VN1700 Classic/Nomad 09-20

Received a K&N KA-1709 filter for my Kawasaki Voyager 1700, and went to fit it to the bike. I couldn't work out why i couldn't get the filter cover back on.
Pulled the filter out again to check it and find a big lump of moulded plastic on the bottom edge of the filter that shouldn't be there. In order to make it fit I had to saw it off so that the cover could fit over it. I contacted K&N about it questioning if this is a regular occurrence but after 2 weeks I've got no reply.
