Merlin Edale II Cotec D3O Black Heritage Wax Cotton Jacket
The second generation of our hugely popular Edale waxed cotton motorcycle jacket has arrived. With the greatest features of our first-generation technical waxed cotton this updated garment sees improvements fed back from years of consumers testing, from around the world. Constructed from 8oz Cotec, this Halley Stevensons®-Merlin collaboration fabric remains exclusive to Merlin and is half the weight but twice the strength of our traditional waxed cotton. Edale II makes use of Outlast® temperature regulating technology within the thermal liner, which can be zipped out if necessary and the garment has even better breathability with an up-spec Humax waterproof membrane. Other improvements include fit, closures, armour positioning, waterproof external pockets, trims and accessories, for an even more refined motorcycle garment.

I needed a water/wind proof jacket, particularly for an upcoming road trip to mid north NSW in July. I did try some textile jackets, but being seated on a cruiser, as the waist bunched up, the stiffness of the cordura forced the neck of the jacket up into my throat. Hence I opted for the softer feeling wax-cotton style of the Edale, which allows the bunching to happen at the waist only.
Manufacturing quality is spot on. You don't feel like you're wearing multiple layers of plastic, like you can with a cordura-type textile jacket. The fact that all D30 armour is included is a bonus.
Sizing: I'm an athletic, broad shouldered 183cm, 95kg. My chest measured 47in (whilst wearing a thin quilted vest over a shirt to allow for layering), so I went with XXL as per the Merlin sizing chart. Fit is spot on with a little room to move, and enough give across the back/shoulders when reaching forward, so the sleeves don't pull up.
As it's going to be my winter-only jacket, I don't expect to be removing the built-in liner, in which case, it isn't overly loose. A size smaller would have been too tight across the shoulders.
I'll come back with some comments after riding in it.
